Excited to be attending the IATA World Safety & Operations Conference next week. It’s always inspiring to see how airlines, while competitors in many areas, never compete on safety. Our industry truly exemplifies collaboration, constantly sharing knowledge and best practices to ensure the highest levels of safety for both customers and crew.I’m also honored to be a speaker in the Cabin Operations track, discussing American Airlines’ approach to extended reality in flight attendant training. I’ll share insights on how virtual reality has improved our competency-based training program and lessons learned in our XR journey. Looking forward to connecting and learning from everyone attending!#IATAWSOC#CabinSafety

Finishing up a great week with the ICAO Working Group on Cabin Crew Digital Learning. The team is developing guidance for the use of extended reality (XR) in flight attendant training programs. The goal is to assist airlines, regulators and manufacturers around the world incorporate these groundbreaking technologies in a safe and consistent manner to enhance flight attendant training and safety. Thank you, Martin and Darlene, for hosting us at ICAO headquarters in Montreal.

At nearly 100 years old, the aviation industry has very few pioneers remaining. Today, the industry lost one of the last - George Mikelsons, founder of American Trans Air (ATA Airlines). An immigrant from Latvia, he founded a charter airline and travel company during the regulation era that eventually became the largest charter carrier and 10th largest airline in the U.S. In the early days, he was both loading the luggage and flying the plane. His wife, Muriel, was customer service and one of the stewardesses. He truly knew every facet of the airline because he had done it all. My first job out of college was with ATA. I applied because the dot-com bust meant there was nothing else available. ATA offered the chance to see the world. I figured I’d find a “real job” within a couple of months and have a chance to travel in the interim. As I still share with each American new hire class today, two weeks into training I was hooked and knew I wanted to be in the training department. One year later . . . I was. Twenty one years on, I owe it to George’s airline and leaders taking a risk on their newest, and youngest ever, instructor. Everyone knew George, everyone liked George, and George loved his airline and team. Our Indy customers loved him - you couldn’t go a day without a customer telling you they were a “friend of George.” They probably felt they were, but any ATA flight attendant or agent knew you could verify actual friends in Sabre via N*FOG. . . and if you were on the list, you were ATA royalty. He created a unique airline, an equal mix of low cost, premium, and charter with the most loyal team you could find. When ATA was struggling, his good friend and fellow pioneer, Herb Kelleher of Southwest, came in with an investment and partnership. They had both started their airlines at the same time, battling the majors all the way. In fact, ATA had become the third largest carrier out of Chicago (after United and American) and just ahead of . . . Southwest. They would eventually buy the assets and name/logo rights as ATA closed. George changed thousands of people’s personal and professional lives through his ambition and leadership. His vision continues to shape this industry with team members at most major carriers, manufacturers, airline consultants and the FAA. Thank you George for giving me my wings in this industry and the career of a lifetime. Your passion for aviation lives on in all of your TZ family. I leave you with George’s welcome video that kicked off each of our new hire classes.

A great week participating in the ICAO Cabin Safety Group Meeting. ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations tasked with the coordination of international air travel. Airline, regulatory, safety and union representatives from around the world gather twice a year in Montreal to discuss and develop guidance to assist the worldwide aviation industry. I had a chance to meet amazing aviation professionals from around the globe as we worked on new material that will be published in the coming months.

Last week I had the opportunity to join colleagues as we visited Airbus at their Toulouse, France, headquarters to discuss our recent order of 85 additional A321neo aircraft. These planes complement our upcoming A321XLR aircraft in addition to the exciting announcement of a cabin interior refresh of our A319 and A320 fleet. American is the world’s largest operator of both the A321 as well as the entire A320 family. The Airbus team were amazing hosts. It was great to experience their commitment to safety and innovation through their various mockups, Safety Promotion Centre and a visit to the A321 final assembly line. And of course, everyone’s favorite flying Beluga made an appearance! #AATeam #airbus #a321neo #beluga

Just before the holidays, Ed, one of our retired Captains, reached out regarding his friend Irene and her upcoming birthday. Irene was an American Airlines stewardess from the late 1940's through early 1950's. She was about to celebrate her 95th birthday and Ed asked if there was anything we could send her way. He shared that some of her fondest memories were of her time flying with AA. With the help of nearly 150 team members, we were able to put together a Happy Birthday video, filmed outside our Flagship DC-3, a plane Irene would have flown! At a company with the rich history of American, Irene is a wonderful reminder that each of us is a caretaker in our role, hoping to leave it better for the next generation. Thank you, Irene, Ed, and all of the amazing AA team past, present and future. #AAteam

This amazing team keeps over 500 American Airlines Inflight training modules up-to-date and processes over 900 new training requests a year. I couldn’t ask to work with a better group of people. They are dedicated to ensuring we meet regulations while also including our awesome flight attendants’ requests around their own training needs. Happy Holidays to our entire AA family and especially the more than 200 Training, Recruitment, Standards and 26,000 Flight Attendant colleagues. #Ashley #brent #brittany #jasmyne #bre #leslie #summer #maggie #diana #nick #bobbie #lisa not pictured #ali #bryce
